As I was doing research on Venice I become more and more excited to see it! The beautiful art work and the canal walkways look awemaziing. I think the most interesting thing I found in my research was that in the fall and early spring the city floods. It is becuse of the tidal waves from the Adriatic sea. I'm so excited to see the beautiful art work and even the city!
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting about Venice. Could you also go to discussion # 3 and look at the information about Florence? Then, come back to this posting place and give a reaction to the Florence information. YOU have been building a consistent response pattern, Megan, and I thank you. AM
ReplyDeleteI read about Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and found it fascinating. Their artwork is amazing. The Mona Lisa is one of my favorite paintings and I hope I get the chance to see it. Da Vinci was truly a genius. While looking through Michelangelo's collection of sculptures, I realized that he was also a genius. His works are incredibly accurate of the human body and, although it's a little revealing, it is nice that people of that time were inspired by the human body. I am looking forward to seeing theirs, as well as many other artists', magnificent pieces of art.
ReplyDeleteThank you for posting a comment about Florence, Megan. You are right about the vast knowledge and talent of these two men.

SPEAKING of the works of Michelangelo and da Vinci... let me share the following info. with all of you.
1) There is an historical fiction novel about Michelangelo's life which tells the"hypothetical" story of how Michelangelo possibly/probably
learned so much about the human form. While it would not have been "sanctioned" to study cadavers in his time period, people believe that he did have "clandestine" access to cadavers. Just by studying the veins in the hands of his subjects and the muscles in their arms and legs, it's amazing to realize how much he knew about anatomy.
Regarding de Vinci's work, The Last Supper painting is in Rome, I believe. The Mona Lisa is in the Louvre in Paris, I think. Since da Vinci was such an "inventor," he experimented with mixing his own paints, and (as you probably know,) the painting of The Last Supper has had to undergo quite a bit of "study and renovation" due to the paint's deterioration.
Did you also know that da Vinci was very interested in aerospace? He left behind drawings of flying machines which were used in the last century (the 1900's) to create the helicopter. It's true!
A NEW DISCUSSION TOPIC BEGINS THIS WEEK.
CHECK BACK THIS WEEK FOR NEW INFORMATION.
The information on Florence is rather amazing! It is hard to comprehend the amount of famous artists that lived in Florence! The artists all lived within a two century period. Many had their own style that made them unique. The “duomo” really caught my attention. It is amazing that something that large could have been created with their small amount of technology. The building itself was created nearly two centuries before the dome part was completed. The building was roofless for 175 years! I am eager to see the “duomo” in person when we go to Italy next summer!

Florence sounds very interesting!
ReplyDeleteAfter doing some reading of Florence, architecture and artwork seems to be the highlights of the city. This is because of the time period of the Renaissance where all of this flourished. I am excited to see the artwork of the famous painters of the time, such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. I am excited to see The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper from da Vinci, as well as the sculptures of David and The Pieta form Michelangelo. I also like Michelangelo’s painting in the Sistine Chapel of God giving life to Adam. I am also looking forward to seeing the famous cathedral of Florence. I have not heard or read much about it until now, so it will be nice to get to tour that. It looks really beautiful.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the cities we are touring this one sounds like it's going to be my favorite. I am so interested in paintings and artwork and this sounds like my city! I am really excited to see da Vinci's work and Michelangos. The statue of David is also one of my favorites. I'm very excited to see the city and all it's beautiful artwork and the especially the Mona Lisa.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Megan L. Florence sounds very interesting and will sounds like it will be my favorite city to tour! I cannot wait to see some of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vincis artwork! I really want to see The Mona Lisa and the Last Supper and some of the paintings and sculptures from Michelangelo! I can't wait to go!
ReplyDeleteAfter doing my research on Florence I am becoming more interested to go there to see all the beautiful art work and the magnificent sculptures. With all there is to see in Florence I think this is going to be one of my favorite stops on our trip. I am especially excited to see Leonardo da Vinci's work on the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper. I can’t wait to go!!
ReplyDeleteHi travelers,
ReplyDeleteIt's July 29, and I am beginning to plan the TWO BLOG discussions for August. MOST of the August blogging will focus on ROME.
This week I was pleased to see that many of you revisited the blog and started saying some more! Thank you. I think that it's very enjoyable to simply read your comments about the things that have surprised you or caused your excitement to build! Keep coming back to the blog and "contributing."
Remember that you can go back to any of the discussions and add some thoughts or some questions.
ONE MORE THING, and I have to smile when I write this! I agree that it would be fun to see the Mona Lisa, but if you go back and read what I previously wrote about that painting, you will realize that we would have to be going to the Louvre IN PARIS if we were going to see the original Mona Lisa painting. // I did add what I think is a VERY GOOD website about the painting. I included that on the blog BECAUSE so many people were inquiring about the painting. THE WEBSITE ABOUT the Mona Lisa is full of information about da Vinci. But LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, we won't be seeing that painting in Italy. (Smile, just like Mona Lisa.)
Keep blogging. Would each of you PLEASE pick up your cell phones THIS WEEK and CALL one traveler who hasn't written anything on the blog all summer. See if you can bring some more travelers to the blog.
The next "new" blog is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, August 1.

Florence seems to be the origin and hearth of art and architecture. Il Duomo is a prime example of that. It will be nice to walk around on the streets and to let everything seep into memory.
