# 1 online discussion June 7-20, Pompeii

Hello Italy Travelers:

I am sending you some links to SITES about Pompeii, Italy.
Be sure to realize that many of these "links" have additional links of their own.
Some of this material is fascinating;  some is very graphic and difficult to digest.

Please read, view, and do all you can to become knowledgeable about Pompeii.

Think about the natural disasters which have occurred on the planet in just the past 2-3 years.
Do some thinking about Pompeii.  Compare it in your mind to the earthquakes, tsunamis, and even Mt. St. Helen's.  (If you don't know about Mt. St. Helen's, please look it up!)

We'll have our on-line discussion of Pompeii running from June 7 - June 20.

On June 21,  a second topic will begin.

HERE ARE SOME LINKS for the POMPEII information:

SHORT VIDEO:
[Here's a CBS news clip about a Pompeii exhibit. PLEASE REMEMBER that a short ad precedes this video clip. Also be aware that a daily news story - whatever day it is - follows the video clip. The news "blip" that follows is not something I can "cut out."  Just stop the clip when the Vesuvius part is over.]

SHORT VIDEO:
(2 minutes) about Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius today.

[Remember that the "Discovery Channel" video clips often have ads which precede the video clips.]

(Part IV of six, about 10 minutes in length)

THERE ARE TWO more parts of the video clip series listed above.  You will surely be able to find them if you view the earlier ones - the four I "linked" here for you.  Although these videos are somewhat "Hollywoodized,"  it does give you an idea of how flabbergasted the victims were, how unprepared, how unaware of what fate was going to bring to them.  As scientists have discovered, Mt. Vesuvius had not erupted for 1,500 years prior to 79 A.D., and the people who were living at that time did not understand what was happening when that volcano erupted.

PLEASE NOTE:  I have checked these sites carefully for appropriateness. Nevertheless, some of them have advertising on them, or they could lead to a link which is too commercial or not appropriate to our purposes.

THREE THINGS you need to know:

a)  Just because an ad pops up selling a lawn mower, that doesn't mean you have come to the wrong site.
The DISCOVERY CHANNEL videos sometimes begin with an ad, and then the video clips starts AFTER the ad.

and

b)  If you find ANYTHING on these sites which you recognize as something that is not appropriate, you need to contact me immediately, asking me to remove it.  As a member of our travel group, you have a responsibility to our group NOT to hesitate if you see a link which does not measure up to CHS Quality Standards. Do not tell your friends about it.  Tell me.

and

c)  Should you come across a link which does not work properly, contact me and let me know immediately.

TRAVELERS:   When you begin posting your comments, many of you will (I'm counting on it) be able to share your reflections on what you are learning, noticing, realizing, getting excited to see!  I also invite you to do your "professional" part to help our conversations become educational, rich, and deep.

EXAMPLE:  Someone who is going on the trip might be very interested in architecture (for example.) Maybe that "traveler" would write something like this...

"Hi everyone, This is Mrs. Moeller. When I was viewing the POMPEII link above, I scrolled to the bottom of the page on the "Mr. SedivyTripod" link. THEN,  I clicked on Background of Pompeii II.  In that set of pictures and descriptions, there is reference to a DORIC COLUMN.  I remembered something one of my relatives used to teach to seniors in high school about the three (Greek) column styles...  Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.  So, I went in search of some "definitions" about those famous "column styles" which we will be seeing  a great deal in Italy.  You might want to know how the three styles differ so you can have fun quizzing each other (when we are in Italy) by asking,  "What kind of a column is that?"  Hmmm!  Who will become the "architectural guru" on our trip?   I wonder...

I SURELY am enjoying it as I search for items to share with you on this blog.
